Delhi Diaries: Why Dilli won my Dil ❤️ | City Tales 🏙️

saneeyahsiddiqui

Writing this blog fills me with immense joy as I share my love for the 'sheheron ka sheher' - Dilwalon ki Dilli😃. My journey in Delhi commenced in 2017 when I arrived with the goal of pursuing higher education in one of the country's most prestigious universities. Since then, Delhi has played a pivotal role in shaping my life, serving as both a cradle for personal growth and a training ground for life skills.

Having relocated from Pune to Delhi over six years ago, my time in the city has been an action-packed journey, filled with drama and emotion. Hailing from Central India, I initially believed that moving to Delhi would be a straightforward transition. The city was relatively close to home, shared a familiar culture in terms of food, language, and 'tehzeeb' (etiquettes), particularly on my university campus. Delhi's excellent connectivity and the option to book last-minute train tickets added to my optimism. However, I soon discovered that the city had more in store for me than logistical challenges.

In the midst of university admissions and the frenzy of overpreparation, I had overlooked a fundamental truth – much like us, cities too are a tapestry of people, emotions, and feelings. Delhi, I soon realized, encapsulated this duality - it could be warm and raging in the same breath. It welcomed me with open arms, its vibrant canvas teeming with people, each harboring stories waiting to be shared. Yet, it also posed tests of resilience, with my first-quarter encounter with dengue standing as the city's mixed reaction and the beginning of numerous challenges.

A dear friend with over a decade's experience came to my aid when he noticed my struggles in navigating the city, despite my never-say-die attitude. He pointed out that Delhi had its unique way of testing newcomers. I needed to adapt to the city's love-hate relationship and its sweet-and-sour flavors before it would fully embrace me. And once I managed to overcome those initial hurdles, I found myself never wanting to leave. As I sit and write these words, my memories flash back vividly, and my friend's words resonate in my heart.

Over time, I gradually found my place in this vibrant city, embracing its historical landmarks and the myriad tales they held. From the iconic Delhi Gate to the majestic Jama Masjid, the narrow lanes of Old Delhi to the grandeur of the Red Fort, Qutab Minar, and Humayun's Tomb, I explored it all. The food trails 🍲 of Chandni Chowk, surrounded by a church, a mosque, a gurudwara, and a temple, resonated with the cosmopolitan culture that Delhi has historically embodied. Its blend of Mughal grandeur, colonial influences, and modern architecture left me craving for more. Delhi truly serves as a melting pot of cultures, where the stark contrast between East Delhi and South Delhi residents is united by local humor.🌟

The striking contrast between the upscale Connaught Place business district and the congested, hyperactive Paharganj, with its canopies and weathered storefronts overlapping along narrow lanes, left me in awe. Delhi offers intriguing shopping destinations, from Lajpat and Khan markets to the budget-friendly Sarojini market and upscale malls. It caters to every pocket size and spoils you with a wide range of choices. Every nook and cranny of Delhi seems to have a story to tell, making places like Sunder Nursery, Lodhi Garden, and the Mehrauli Archaeological Park ideal havens for unwinding.🌆

My journey in Delhi extended beyond academic and intellectual pursuits; the city provided me with comprehensive life training. I gained an education and connected with peers from diverse fields in other leading universities across the capital. Delhi exposed me to a world beyond my professional endeavors, allowing me to explore interests in theater, marathons, travel, lectures, and literary events, all of which catered to my dynamic personality.

From being someone who often agreed and said 'yes' to everything, I transformed into someone who mastered the art of saying 'no.' Delhi compelled me to learn guerrilla warfare tactics to survive in any corner of the world. The city became my mentor, shaping me into a better, strong-willed version of myself. It set me on a path of self-discovery, offering numerous opportunities to be nothing but myself. I realized that, much like the city itself, I needn't confine myself to a single identity or conform to a particular norm. I could embrace multiple identities, diverse outlooks, and ever-evolving perspectives while staying true to myself.

My once overly sophisticated self found amusement in the way Dilliwalas bantered, argued, and bickered with each other, all while extending helping hands and sharing smiles and affection. I discovered the joy of relishing street food on Delhi's bustling streets and forged lasting friendships that will span a lifetime. Admittedly, Delhi's pollution tested my resilience, its chilly winters seemed to pierce through my very being, and the summer heat remains a challenge. Yet, as I sit back and reminisce, I realize that Delhi was an experience to savor. I'm grateful that destiny has granted me opportunities to have more encounters with Delhi and stay to bask in its enchanting magic.

And now, as I conclude🌇, I can't help but recall the lyrics from the song in the movie 'Delhi 6,' which resonate with the sentiments I've shared:

"Iske baayein taraf bhi dil hai

Iske daayein taraf bhi dil hai

Yeh sheher nhi mehfil hai"

It has a heart on the left side

It has a heart on the right side

This is not a city but a gathering

In the words of Kushwant Singh in his novel- Delhi: A Novel, "Delhi is more than just a city; it's an emotion". What better emotion to experience than the unique tapestry of life, culture, and history that Delhi offers?
